WATSONVILLE — A century ago, a sign hoisted above Watsonville's Main Street proclaimed it 'The Apple City.' These days, however, berries dominate the fields around the city, the majority of the country's apples are supplied by Washington state, and the few apple growers remaining in the Pajaro Valley must contend with soaring land prices and winter temperatures too warm for their trees to grow fruit. The farmers who tend the Pajaro Valley's orchards acknowledge that the apple industry is at a crossroads.
